Do children derive exact meanings pragmatically? Evidence from a dual morphology language

چکیده
Number words allow us to describe exact quantities like sixty-three and (exactly) one. How do we derive interpretations? By some views, these are lexically exact, therefore unlike other grammatical forms in language. Other theories, however, argue that numbers not special their interpretation arises from pragmatic enrichment, rather than lexically. For example, the word one may gain its because presence of immediate successor two licenses inference implies “one, two”. To investigate possible role enrichment development representations, looked outside test case number morphological markers quantity. In particular, asked whether children can an singular noun phrases (e.g., “a button”) when language features “successor” encodes sets two. this, used a series tasks compare English-speaking who have only plural morphology Slovenian-speaking forms, but also dual morphology, is describing Replicating previous work, found preschoolers failed enrich did treat it as exact. New present study, 4- 5-year-old Slovenian-speakers comprehended treated form while younger Slovenian were still learning not, providing evidence young meanings pragmatically.

Below I will analyze defensible inferences underlying the interpretation of conversational implicatures and presuppositions; a nonmonotonic onsequence notion will lead from premises including pragmatic generalizations to conclusions about how those sentences are best interpreted..
متن کاملChildren learn non-exact number word meanings first
Children acquire exact meanings for number words in distinct stages. First, they learn one, then two, and then three and sometimes four. Finally, children learn to apply the counting procedure to their entire count list. Although these stages are ubiquitous and well documented, the foundation of these meanings remains highly contested. Here we ask whether children assign preliminary meanings to...
متن کاملDo Word Meanings Exist?
My contribution to this discussion is to attempt to spread a little radical doubt. Since I have spent over 30 years of my life writing and editing monolingual dictionary definitions, it may seem rather odd that I should be asking, do word meanings exist? The question is genuine, though: prompted by some puzzling facts about the data that is now available in the form of machine-readable corpora....
متن کاملHow Do Agricultural Subsectors Respond to Productivity Shocks? Evidence from a Bayesian DSGE Model in Iran
Understanding the dynamics of productivity shocks is instrumental if we are to identify the sources of economic growth. This paper, investigates dynamic effects of positives productivity shocks to agricultural subsectors during the period from 1991-2015, by disaggregating agricultural sector in Iran into four key subsectors (crops, livestock, fishing and forestry) through an estimated DSGE mode...
متن کاملInfarct Fibroblasts Do Not Derive From Bone Marrow Lineages.
RATIONALE Myocardial infarction is a major cause of adult mortality worldwide. The origin(s) of cardiac fibroblasts that constitute the postinfarct scar remain controversial, in particular the potential contribution of bone marrow lineages to activated fibroblasts within the scar. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to establish the origin(s) of infarct fibroblasts using lineage tracing and b...
